Police officers were attacked in two separate incidents as they patrolled near downtown Salt Lake City's homeless shelters on Sunday.
At 12:13 p.m., officers were called to quell a fight outside the Road Home shelter, in the 200 South block of Rio Grande Street. When police attempted to arrest a woman, her husband fought them. Officers used pepper spray and a shock from a Taser to subdue the man.
The 49-year-old man was booked into the Salt lake County jail on suspicion of misdemeanor assault on a police officer and interfering with an arrest. The 38-year-old woman was jailed on suspicion of third-degree felony aggravated assault and misdemeanor disorderly conduct.
No officers were hurt in the incident, but that was no the case in another incident at nearby Pioneer Park about four hours later, said SLCPD Detective Greg Wilking.
A bicycle officer was rising past two men, one 19 and the other 18, when one of the men ordered their pit bull dog to attack. The dog did not reach the officer, but when the officer dismounted to speak with the men it attacked again, this time biting him on the forearm.
Other officers arrived and arrested the men, and the dog was taken into custody by animal control officers.
The men were booked into jail on suspicion of second-degree felony aggravated assault on a police officer.
The officer was treated for his injuries at the scene.
